This is one of my personal go-to walks when I don’t feel like driving too far (from Ponta do Sol) and want to avoid anything too challenging due to my slight fear of heights.

Levada Nova stretches a total of around 40 kilometers, but this section runs from Prazeres to Lombada dos Marinheiros (Fajã da Ovelha) and covers about 12 kilometers one way. If you walk the same way back, it’s about 24 kilometers, taking roughly 7 to 8 hours. However, you can always explore just part of the path and turn back whenever you feel like it. I usually walk for 1.5 to 2 hours in one direction before returning.

The scenery is quite consistent along the way, with tall trees like eucalyptus and pine, as well as local houses and farmland. In the wetter areas, you’ll spot native Laurissilva vegetation such as laurel trees and barbusano. You’ll also cross several streams and small rivers like Ribeiras da Calheta, Marinheiros, Moinhos, Seca, and Funda.

The path passes through fields where locals grow potatoes, sweet potatoes, and green beans, alongside subtropical fruits such as figs, papayas, lemons, and apples. It’s a peaceful route with plenty of opportunities to pause, take in the surroundings, and enjoy the rural charm of Madeira.
