Peru
If you’ve traveled all the way to Peru, you might be tempted to add on a neighboring country or region. With shared borders, easy flights, and overland options, it’s simple to extend your trip and see even more of South America.
Bolivia
Lake Titicaca: From Puno, it’s easy to cross into Bolivia and visit Copacabana or Isla del Sol. The lake feels completely different on the Bolivian side, with fewer tourists and quieter villages.
La Paz: A wild mix of tradition and modernity, with cable cars crisscrossing the city and access to the surreal Uyuni Salt Flats.
Visa Costs: U.S. citizens (and some other nationalities) must purchase a Bolivian visa at the border, currently around $160 USD. Bring crisp bills and expect some waiting time. This visa is good for up to ten years.
👉 Pro Tip: Bring cash in USD or soles for the border crossing. ATMs are not always reliable on the Bolivian side.
Chile
Atacama Desert: From southern Peru, you can fly into northern Chile to explore otherworldly landscapes of salt flats, geysers, and stargazing.
Santiago & Wine Country: Direct flights from Lima make it easy to pair Peru’s history and hikes with Chile’s cosmopolitan capital and vineyards.
Rapa Nui (Easter Island): One of the most remote inhabited islands on earth, famous for its moai statues. Accessible by flight from Santiago, it’s a bucket-list extension if you have time and budget. This was one of our favorites!
Ecuador
Quito & the Andes: A short flight from Lima or Cusco connects you to Ecuador’s highland culture and colonial cities.
Galápagos Islands: The ultimate extension if your budget allows. Flying via Guayaquil or Quito makes this doable as part of a longer South America trip.
Other Options
Argentina: A flight from Lima to Buenos Aires is a popular connection if you want a contrast of urban culture, tango, and wine.
Colombia: Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena are just a few hours away by plane, making it a great follow-up if you’re chasing sunshine and Caribbean vibes.
✨ Bottom Line: Whether it’s Bolivia’s salt flats, Chile’s desert skies, or Ecuador’s islands, Peru can be the gateway to a wider South American journey. If time and budget allow, think about extending your adventure.
