Location:

The Painted Cliffs Track is located on Maria Island National Park, off the east coast of Tasmania. The cliffs are famous for their striking sandstone patterns, etched by wind and sea, creating beautiful streaks of red, orange, and white. The track winds through coastal scenery and open woodland, with frequent sightings of wombats and other wildlife.

How to get there:

To reach Maria Island, drive or take transport to Triabunna on Tasmania’s east coast. From there, take the ferry operated by Encounter Maria Island (30–45 minutes crossing) to the Darlington jetty on the island. From the jetty, the walk to the Painted Cliffs begins. Note that private vehicles are not allowed on the island; walking or cycling is required. The best time to access the cliffs is around low tide, as the final section is on a rock platform.

Hike length:

Approximately 4.3 km return from Darlington to the cliffs, taking around 1.5–2 hours depending on pace.

Difficulty Level:

Easy to moderate — the trail is mostly on a well-formed track, but the rock-platform section near the cliffs requires care.

Dogs allowed:

No — dogs are not permitted in Maria Island National Park.

More information:

The Painted Cliffs Track offers a rewarding short walk with spectacular coastal scenery and unique sandstone formations. The trail is ideal for photography, wildlife spotting, and a gentle introduction to Maria Island. For a longer adventure, the track can be combined with other island walks such as the Fossil Cliffs or Bishop & Clerk.

Cost:

Ferry Triabunna - Maria Island

  • Ferry return ticket: ~AUD $54 per adult.

  • Concession / Student / Child fares: ~$43 for concession, $33 for students/children.

Entry cost / Park passes:

A valid parks pass is required for entry to Tasmania’s national parks. For example:

  • A Daily Pass (up to 24 hours): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $47.70. A per‑person pass (travelling by bus, cycle or on foot) costs AUD $23.85

• A Holiday Pass (up to 2 months): Per vehicle (up to 8 people) costs AUD $95.50. Per person (travelling by bus/cycle/foot) costs AUD $47.75
This “holiday” option gives you access to all Tasmanian national parks for up to two months from the start date.
Note: Prices may change, so it’s best to check the official site before you go.
