Things I wouldn’t do in Lofoten Islands this summer

Especially if you are coming with a camper van or are coming to explore outdoors.

After spending years exploring every corner of the Lofoten Islands, through storms, midnight sun, chatting with locals and spending time exploring around, I’ve learned a lot about what not to do. Whether you’re road-tripping in a van or staying in cozy rorbuer by the sea, there are some common mistakes that can easily turn an epic adventure into a frustrating one. So I’ve put together a list of things I personally wouldn’t do when planning a summer trip to Lofoten. Learn from my mishaps, save yourself the stress, and make space for the magic instead.

  1. Book accommodation last minute – Places fill up quickly in summer, Especially between July and August.

  2. Skip renting a car – Public transport is very limited and poorly connected; a car gives freedom.

  3. Underestimate the weather – Pack layers; summer can be cold and rainy. ( windproof and waterproof jacket is a must! )

  4. Overpack the itinerary – Allow time for spontaneous stops and weather delays. ( Remember, the plan is " don't have a strict plan" )

  5. Rely only on Google Maps – Some roads and trailheads are poorly marked.

  6. Ignore the midnight sun – Bring a sleep mask; it stays bright all night.

  7. Expect nightlife – Lofoten is quiet; nature is the main attraction, there are some pubs and bars in Leknes and Svolvaer but trust me: The best party you can have is in nature with the midnight sun and some snacks.

  8. Forget to book ferries in advance – Especially Moskenes–Bodø route. In summer they get PACKED.

  9. Plan only famous spots – Explore lesser-known areas for a more peaceful experience.

  10. Leave no buffer days – Weather can impact hikes and activities.

If you are coming with a van, please, don't do these things:

  1. Park overnight anywhere – Use designated spots; wild camping rules are strict and remember not to park in someone's drive way.

  2. Ignore toilet and waste rules – Dispose properly at service stations.

  3. Skip checking tunnel heights and road signs – Some roads are narrow and not van-friendly.

  4. Rely only on gas stations for supplies – Shops can be far apart; stock up when possible.

  5. Forget mosquito repellent – Especially in still, humid areas. August is the "mosquito month" in Lofoten Islands and they can be REALLY annoying.

  6. Drive without checking road conditions – Landslides or construction happen, check https://www.vegvesen.no/ for road updates!

  7. Leave things unsecured – Sudden wind gusts are common even in summer.

  8. Assume everywhere has good Wi-Fi – Signal can be weak; download offline maps especially when you go hiking.

  9. Be noisy at night – Locals value peace and quiet, respect the environment and also their private areas.

  10. Ignore battery and water levels – Refill and recharge regularly; for your own safety.
