Stay dry, stay warm, stay wild! Everything you need (and nothing you don’t) for a magical Arctic summer in Lofoten! :)
Summer in the Lofoten Islands is something else, golden light around the clock, dramatic mountain peaks, crystal clear waters, and weather that loves to surprise you. Whether you’re chasing sunsets at midnight, hiking above the fjords, or jumping into the sea after a sauna session, packing smart will make your adventure smoother (and warmer).
After many seasons of exploring these islands, here’s my ultimate summer packing list: tried, tested, and essential whether you’re road tripping in a van or staying in a cozy rorbu.
Clothing:
Waterproof jacket & pants – It will rain, hopefully it wont, but it's always better to be ready.
Warm layers – Even in summer, it can feel chilly. Think wool sweaters or fleece.
Quick dry T-shirts & base layers – Great for layering and drying fast after a hike.
Hiking pants or leggings – Comfortable and weather friendly.
Swimsuit – For post-sauna dips in the Arctic ocean.
Hat & gloves – You might not expect it, but trust me, they come in handy.
Sleep mask – Midnight sun means 24/7 daylight, great for adventures, less so for sleep.
Footwear:
Hiking boots with good grip – Trails can be steep and slippery.
Sandals or slip-ons – Easy for campgrounds, cabins, or sauna strolls.
Wool socks – Warm, breathable, and no stink. Bring several pairs and let them air dry. You can wear them multiple times without washing them.
Gear & Accessories:
Reusable water bottle – Tap water in Norway is clean, cold, and delicious. Skip spending money in bottles of water at the supermarket!
Backpack for day hikes – Big enough for snacks, water, and a few layers.
Towel – Quick-dry is best, especially if you’re sauna-hopping or wild swimming.
Camera or phone with good storage – You’ll want to capture everything.
Headlamp or flashlight – Not always needed in summer, but useful in tunnels or cabins.
Nice-to-haves (but not essential):
Binoculars – For eagle spotting or midnight moose watching.
Notebook or journal – For sketching, writing, or just soaking it all in.
Earplugs – If you’re sensitive to noise (like seagulls at 3am).
Don’t over pack. You’ll wear your favorite pieces on repeat, and laundry is easy to do on the go. Focus on comfort, practicality, and a few cozy layers, and you’re ready for your Lofoten summer adventure.
