If you want to catch sunrise at Pico Ruivo without hiking in the dark, you can actually stay the night at the Pico Ruivo Shelter House 🏔️
It’s a pretty rustic mountain hut located just 15 minutes below the summit. It’s simple but functional: private rooms, shared bathrooms, a small kitchen, and space for up to 12 people.
It's pretty affordable to stay overnight (€30 per person as of May 2025), but you also get what you pay for. There’s no heating, limited electricity, and it gets really cold at night ❄️
Bring warm layers and a sleeping bag to stay comfortable. We ended up cooking a big pot of mac and cheese with veggies and ate it by the fireplace to warm up!
The shelter has drinkable running water, cold showers, toilets, Wi-Fi, and a basic kitchen + cookware – so you can bring your own food and cook.
To book, you’ll need to email or call them directly. In the low season, a few days’ notice is usually enough. But in summer, try to book a little further in advance to secure your spot.
You can contact Casa de Abrigo via phone or through email to book your stay.
