One of our favourite streets in Funchal is Rua de Santa Maria — a colourful, cobblestone street in the old town. It dates all the way back to the 15th century, but today it’s best known for its painted doors, cozy restaurants, and that lively buzz you’ll feel when you walk down it in the evening 🖼️
The whole street is part of the “Art of Open Doors” project, where local artists turned the doors and facades into an open-air gallery. It’s such a fun area to explore! 🎨
In the morning, you'll find that the street is quiet and empty with the exception of a few locals and tourists. The restaurants and cafés aren't allowed to put their tables outside until 10 am, so there'sa good opportunity to see all the painted doors at this time.
If you're walking from the centre and heading East, you'll end up at our favourite local bakery & coffee joint in Madeira: Padaria Pastelaria Mariazinha 🥐☕️
Then, in the afternoon and evening, this is a very popular spot to sit down for dinner. Our favourite restaurant on the street is Restaurante Taberna Ruel. The service is sometimes a bit slow, but the food is great! 😋
