Reykir - Grettislaug is a charming geothermal hot spring located in Iceland, nestled in a picturesque setting.

Located in Reykir, in the stunning Skagafjörður fjord of North Iceland, Grettislaug is a legendary bathing spot steeped in saga lore. This natural geothermal pool, beautifully constructed with local stones, offers visitors a unique chance to soak by the seaside with breathtaking views – including a clear sight of Drangey Island.

Temperature of the water is between 37-39 Celcius (102 F) . And there is an entrance fee 2000 isk/ per person.

According to Icelandic sagas, Grettislaug is named after Grettir the Strong, the famous outlaw from Grettir’s Saga. As the story goes, while hiding out on Drangey Island, Grettir swam across the freezing waters of Skagafjörður to the mainland. Cold and exhausted, he found warmth and refuge in the geothermal waters of this very pool.

In the early 1900s, there were originally two pools in this area: Reykjalaug, used for washing clothes, and Grettislaug, named after the saga hero. Sadly, both pools were destroyed during a powerful storm in the early 20th century.

Decades later, in 1992, local residents decided to restore the historic site. Under the leadership of Jón Eiríksson, the pools were rebuilt. Reykjalaug was renamed Jarlslaug ("The Earl’s Pool") in his honor, and together, the two pools continue to welcome guests seeking a peaceful soak in a setting rich with history and legend.
