According to Greek mythology, the giant Sarantapihos, son of Zeus, once stopped to drink from the Kryos (or Myrtos) River near Ierapetra. As he bent down, his long beard split the mountain in two, forming what is now known as Sarakina Gorge.

Sarakina Gorge is a stunning natural wonder in eastern Crete, located near the traditional village of Mythi. The 1.5 km-long trail is suitable for hikers with moderate experience, as it involves several steep climbs.

The Kryopotamos River flows through the gorge year-round, creating picturesque waterfalls and tranquil ponds. Depending on the season, you may need to navigate large boulders, narrow passages, and even wade through knee-deep water. However, if you visit in summer, water levels are significantly lower, making the hike easier.

The trail is well-marked, with carved footholds on boulders and ropes in more challenging sections to assist with climbing.
