Black-a-Tor Copse is a hidden gem of ancient woodland that rivals the famous Wistman's Wood, in my opinion it’s so much better!

With its gnarled trees and moss-covered boulders, it feels like stepping into a fairytale. The walk to get there is easy but not flat, with some uphill sections and a bit of rock hopping.

Once inside the wood, there is no path, so you have to be careful not to damage the fragile moss. Despite the lack of signposting, it's hard to get lost, and the reward of experiencing this enchanting forest is well worth it. Plus, you'll likely have the place all to yourself.

The walk is 4.5 miles return when you follow the path along Meldon Reservoir. Park in the reservoir car park (bring coins for parking) and follow the path to the far end of the water and turn right. Simply follow this track until you reach the junction with the two bridges and follow the track left facing in to the moorland. It’s a fairly easy track from here to the copse, and keep your eyes peeled for the waterfall!
