If you need to call for help (999), you can summarise the situation using the acronym ETHANE:

  • Exact location: Grid reference - What3words app

  • Type of incident

  • Hazards (terrain, weather conditions)

  • Access (what’s the easiest way to reach you?)

  • Number: of casualties

  • Emergency services - which ones are needed?

Hiking Safety Checklist:

  • Always check the weather forecast before you start hiking each day

  • Make sure navigation devices are charged & maps are available for offline use

  • Make sure you have the ten essentials (see day hike visual packing reference page) & weather-appropriate clothing

  • Make sure you have adequate water & snacks for the day ahead

  • Stay on the marked trail
