Wild cable car ride down to a hidden fajã on the north coast

This cable car is one of my favorite “secret” adventures on Madeira’s north coast. It drops you from the cliffs of Santana down to Rocha do Navio, a quiet rocky fajã with waterfalls, tidal pools, and old farm terraces. Hardly anyone comes here compared to the famous Achadas da Cruz – it feels remote and timeless.

I love taking guests here after exploring Santana’s A-frame houses – we grab a snack in town, then head down to the ocean for complete silence.

• Check the tide – low tide reveals tidal pools you can explore.

For those who want more context
The name Rocha do Navio (“Ship’s Rock”) comes from a 19th-century Dutch shipwreck. The fajã below is still farmed by locals, accessible only by cable car or steep footpath – a living reminder of Madeira’s coastal isolation.
