Often referred to as the Bavarian Caribbean thanks to its crystal-clear, turquoise waters, Walchensee is one of the most stunning alpine lakes in Germany. Surrounded by mountains and forests, it’s a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, and water sports enthusiasts alike.

The lake is especially popular with kite- and windsurfers due to the steady thermal winds. Several hiking trails wind along the shoreline and into the surrounding hills, offering fantastic panoramic views.

There are multiple parking areas around the lake, and access from the Jachenau panoramic toll road (€5 per day for cars) leads to some of the most scenic and quiet swimming spots. On warm summer weekends, the area can get quite busy, so it’s best to arrive early.

A perfect place to take a break is the Waldschänke Niedernach, a rustic lakeside inn known for its hearty meals, homemade cakes, and traditional Bavarian charm.
