One week in Madeira

What you'll do

In this itinerary I will try to give you the best experience for a one week trip in Madeira. As I mentioned in the Travel Tips, to explore Madeira the best I would recommend to find a nice hotel or hostel (whatever your budget) in the capital (Funchal) and stay there during your whole stay in Madeira. The farthest you wil have to drive from Funchal is a 1 hour drive (to Porto Moniz).

This itinerary is meant to give you an idea what to do in Madeira for a one week stay. I don't know where your priorities are at (hiking, photography, strolling through cities, being at the beach, ...). So I did my best to give something of everything in this itinerary.

Day 1

Day one we start of with highest viewpoint on Madeira. After that you will go on a relatively short hike called Levada do Moinho (approximately 3hours). Finally you can relax in the beautiful town of Ponta do Sol and walk through it's beautiful streets. You can take a stroll to the other locations mentioned as well. Cascata dos Anjos is the furthest point out but you can take the car to this spot as well.

Cabo Girão Skywalk

Skywalk at Cabo Girão Cliff

The Spectacular Cabo Girão Skywalk is an immensely popular tourist destination in Madeira, thanks to its ease of access and stunning vistas. Standing at a staggering height of 580 meters above sea level, it is one of the world's highest sea cliffs and a mere 20-minute drive from Funchal. The glass pathway presents an unparalleled view straight down to the tumultuous waves and the cliffs below. Not only that, but it also provides an unobstructed panoramic view of Funchal city and is a spectacular spot for a sunset view. While not our personal favourite photo spot in Madeira, it's still worth visiting.

Millstream Trail

The Levada do Moinho to Levada Nova hike, situated in Ponta do Sol, offers a delightful levada stroll featuring a distinctive waterfall along the route. This circular trek spanning 9 kilometers is relatively effortless, with only about 150 meters of ascent via concrete stairs. The trail's highlight is the segment that has been excavated into the cliff face, where the waterfall cascades over the path. The remainder of the hike is alongside two levadas, providing panoramic valley vistas. Unlike other levada walks in Madeira, this trek does not offer a genuine forest walk, resulting in a somewhat reduced 'jungle' ambiance. Nonetheless, it provides extensive views throughout the journey.

The Levada do Moinho to Levada Nova hike begins at Casa Carreira 24 in Ponta do Sol, located on the south coast of the island. The starting point is adjacent to the "Igreja da Lombada da Ponta do Sol," a white church with ample parking facilities. Unfortunately, public transportation to the trailhead is not available, necessitating the use of a rental car or a taxi. The closest Rodoeste bus stop is "Ponta Do Sol Rotunda," requiring an additional 30-45 minutes of travel to reach the levada trail.

This is a beautiful location to take some pictures with the winding roads in the background as well as some rocky mountains. Try different focal lengths to get different results.

Hole in a rock

This is a nice little location along the coast just outside of Ponta do Sol. First you pass an old bridge and then you come across this spot. It's fun to play around with different angles.

Waterfall on the road

Located just outside Ponta do Sol on the island of Madeira, Portugal, Cascata dos Anjos is a spectacular waterfall that cascades over the old highway ER 101. To get there, take the exit at the roundabout in Ponta do Sol when driving west from Ribeira Brava to Madalena do Mar on road VE3. Avoid going into the tunnel and instead, take the small road along the sea. After 1.8 kilometers, the waterfall comes into view, and passing vehicles get a refreshing shower as the water flows over the road. The road at Cascata dos Anjos is very narrow, and there is no designated stopping area, although it may be possible to pull over if traffic allows.
