🌊 A shipwreck with a story – just off Moturekareka Island 🌊

Visible just offshore, the wreck of the Rewa (originally launched in 1889 as the Alice A. Leigh) is a striking sight and one of New Zealand’s most accessible maritime relics. This four-masted steel barque was towed here in 1931 to serve as part of a breakwater, but accidentally sank at an angle, leaving her dramatic silhouette on display.

Located near Moturekareka Island, north of Auckland, the partially submerged wreck is now popular with snorkelers, kayakers, and photographers. The calm waters and marine life make it a scenic and peaceful adventure.

🔹 Great for day trips from Auckland
🔹 Best accessed by boat or kayak
🔹 Ideal for history buffs and water lovers

The old shipwreak is a fun snorkel for the family. Lots of reef fish call it home and is most pretty with the afternoon sun coming through the water through the natural underwater windows. There is a short walk over the island with good views around the gulf.

Reviews:

“Snorkeling around the Rewa was unforgettable. So much life down there, and the wreck itself is huge!”

“Amazing to see such a historic ship so close to shore. A unique mix of nature and history.”
