Is there any better way to end a walk than at a pub with a play park next door? well how about if I tell you there's a river in the village you can splash in too?

And even without all that, the walk around Castell y Bare is stunning in its own right - set in a spectacular valley with 360 views this is one of my favourite castle ruins so far. You can park at the bottom of the castle (free) and follow the path through the woodland up to the castle, it's a short 1km walk and took us about 15 minutes. This is a great option if you have smaller children as they can walk the route up to the castle and then explore all the little rooms, passage ways and viewpoints the castle has to offer.

However if you fancy a longer walk you can park in Abergynolwyn and walk cross country to the castle - this is a short but steady climb but does give you some extra beautiful views as you walk round the hillside. And the most important part is that you get to walk (or drive if you opted for the shorter walk) back to the pub for your big treat at the end. The Railway Inn in Abergynolwyn is a lovely traditional pub with real local ales, cosy fires and traditional pub grub. Although there isn't a large beer garden there is seating outside and a play park next door - so we took it in turns to take the kids to the park while the others relaxed at the pub.
