On the southern tip of Tromsø island lies Telegrafbukta, a small yet stunning beach that quickly became one of my favorite places in Tromsø. With soft white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and views of snowy mountains on the horizon, it feels like a slice of the Arctic at its most magical. The best part? It’s easily accessible — you can get here on foot from the city center or by a short bus ride, making it perfect if you’re exploring without a car.

In winter, Telegrafbukta is unforgettable. The sunsets are slow and dramatic, washing the sky with pastel pinks, golds, and fiery reds over the mountains. And once darkness falls, this is one of the best free places in Tromsø to watch the northern lights without leaving the island — far enough from the city lights for clear skies, yet close enough to reach easily.

Insider tip: Bundle up well (it can be very windy), bring a tripod and a thermos, and settle in. The auroras are unpredictable, but patience here really pays off. If you’re visiting during the polar night, you may also catch the surreal midday glow — a soft blue “daylight” that appears briefly before the darkness returns.

Bonus for photographers: Telegrafbukta looks good in any season — from glowing midsummer evenings to frozen winter days. Outside of summer, you’ll often have the place almost to yourself.

Nearby: Folkeparken, a peaceful woodland area just a short walk away, is ideal for a stroll before heading back to the beach for sunset or the aurora show.
