Cape Reinga is the northern tip of the North Island and holds strong spiritual significance for Māori. It is believed to be the place where after death, all Māori spirits travel up the coast and over the wind-swept vista to the pohutukawa tree on the headland of Te Rerenga Wairua, before returning to the land of their ancestors, Hawaiiki.

From the Cape Reinga lighthouse, you will have stunning 360 degree coastal views. At the cape, you can see where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean, marked by swirling currents and turbulent waves.

Follow SH1 north from Kaitaia, until you cannot go any further :) From the carpark, it is a short 1.5km walk to the lighthouse, along a well maintained, accessible path.

Remember: Treat the sacred site with respect, stay on marked paths and follow any signage. Avoid eating or drinking at the lighthouse as a sign of respect.

Personal tip: It may seem like a long journey to get here, but it’s well worth it. Try visiting in the morning or evening to avoid any crowds and allow time to read information boards and understand the cultural significance of this sacred place.

Pronunciation: Reinga - ray-nga
