• 4 WD ONLY!!! Multiple Watercrossings including one waterfall, usually acessible for DIY tour from June - September

Maelifell Volcano in Iceland's Highlands is probably the most unknown sight on our list and is really hard to get to. There are probably only a few days during the year where you can visit this stunning place. Avoid rainy days as there are multiple rivers to cross. Avoid very windy days as there will be too much ash flying around which will damage your car. The safest way to get there is fom the south. DO NOT use google maps!!!

To get here you need to follow the road 209 and then merge left onto F232 (right here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/XPtngXPxTf9Xs6RB8) which requires a very good high clearance 4 WD as the road is very bumpy with large rocks and more than 6 water crossing leading up to Blafjallafoss and Maelifell.

When you arrive at the Blafjallafoss Crossing getting into the crossing is easy but getting back up out on the other side requires a lot of 4WD experience and high clearance as the way is very washed out, we even had to turn our diff lockers on (if you need to google what diff lockers are then you probably shouldnt attempt this drive). Only attempt this track with a very good 4WD and the right weather conditions.

Keep in mind: river crossings are not insured with any rental company in Iceland.

After clearing the waterfall crossing, there are no other crossings to be done. However, there is a dessert plain before Maelifell that can get flooded during rain which makes the dessert plain challenging to cross. We even had ice here and had to stop and turn around as it was too dangerous. So Yes, pick a sunny bright day and leave early in the morning to leave enough time for the crossing!
