Tucked into the heart of Theth village, the Reconciliation Tower, also known as the Lock-in Tower, offers a powerful glimpse into Albania’s past. While many people come to Theth for its hiking trails and mountain views, this small stone building tells a different kind of story: one rooted in centuries-old traditions of justice, honor, and community.

What is the Reconciliation Tower?
The Reconciliation Tower was once a key part of how conflicts were resolved in this region of northern Albania. Built over 400 years ago, the tower served as a neutral meeting place for families locked in blood feuds (gjakmarrja), a practice once common in highland areas governed by the Kanun: a traditional set of Albanian laws and codes.

Instead of ongoing violence, the goal of the tower was peace: to create space for reconciliation, through mediation and negotiation, often led by respected village elders. It’s said that hundreds of disputes from the wider region were resolved here.

Architecture and Atmosphere
The tower is built in the typical highland style: with thick stone walls, narrow windows, and a compact, fortress-like layout. Originally designed to offer protection, these features now give visitors a strong sense of the isolation and seriousness that surrounded the reconciliation process.

Inside, you’ll find a small, dark room that once hosted long discussions between families trying to find resolution. It's a sobering and fascinating space.

Taking a Tour
The tower is open to visitors, and you can often get a short guided tour from locals, including descendants of the Koceku family who have preserved it for generations. The tour offers context about the Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini, the Catholic influence in the region, and how community trust played a vital role in upholding peace.

The personal stories shared during the tour bring the history to life, offering an intimate look at a tradition that shaped this community for centuries.

When to Visit
Since it’s located right in Theth village, the tower is easy to visit on foot, and you won’t need to plan your day around it. It’s best to visit in the morning or late afternoon, especially if you’re pairing it with a hike to nearby sights like the Grunas Waterfall or Blue Eye.
