The Eierhäuschen, nestled along the banks of the River Spree in Berlin's Plänterwald district, is a historic gem that has been thoughtfully revitalized to blend cultural heritage with contemporary art and cuisine.

A Storied Past

Originally established in 1837 as a riverside tavern, the Eierhäuschen quickly became a beloved destination for Berliners seeking leisure and refreshment. The name "Eierhäuschen" ("Egg Cottage") is believed to stem from a local innkeeper who sold eggs to passing boaters. The current structure, designed by architect Karl Frobenius, was constructed between 1890 and 1892 and is noted for its distinctive red brick façade, ornamental tower, and elements inspired by Norwegian wooden architecture. The venue gained literary fame when Theodor Fontane featured it in his 1897 novel Der Stechlin.

Revival and Renewal

After decades of closure and decline following the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Eierhäuschen underwent extensive restoration beginning in 2019. Reopened in March 2024, it now serves as a multifaceted venue combining gastronomy, art, and community engagement. The renovation preserved the building's historical character while adapting it for modern use.

Culinary Delights

The on-site restaurant, EI-12437-B, offers a menu that fuses traditional German cuisine with innovative culinary techniques, emphasizing fresh, regional, and seasonal ingredients. Guests can enjoy meals in the indoor dining area or the spacious beer garden, which accommodates up to 350 patrons and provides a relaxed atmosphere amidst the surrounding greenery.

A Hub for Contemporary Art

Beyond its culinary offerings, the Eierhäuschen houses the Spreepark Art Space, featuring exhibition areas and artist-in-residence programs. The art space showcases works that explore themes such as landscape, nature, architecture, and public space, fostering a dialogue between the site's historical context and contemporary artistic expression .

  • Public Transport: Accessible via S-Bahn stations Treptower Park or Plänterwald, followed by a scenic walk through the Plänterwald forest.

The Eierhäuschen stands as a testament to Berlin's commitment to preserving its historical landmarks while infusing them with new life and purpose. Whether you're seeking a cultural excursion, a culinary experience, or a leisurely retreat by the river, the Eierhäuschen offers a unique and enriching destination.
