If you want to experience magical snowy landscapes, Riisitunturi National Park in Finnish Lapland is one of the best spots. In winter, the park turns into a real winter wonderland. The snow-covered trees, called "tykkypuut" create an incredible fairy-tale scene that’s perfect for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on peaceful, well-marked trails. You can also walk there without any gear on the main trail, but if it has just snowed a lot, then forget about it.
In summer, the park offers a completely different vibe: lush green fells, colorful wildflowers, and calm lakes. It’s a great place for easy hikes, berry picking, and just relaxing in untouched nature.
Getting There:
Riisitunturi is about 60 km north of Kuusamo and roughly 40 km from the village of Posio. The easiest way to get there is by car—there’s a parking area near the park entrance "Riisitunturi lähtöpiste on google maps" . If you’re relying on public transport, take a bus to Posio and then a taxi or arrange local transport. Having a car makes exploring the area way easier.
Easy Trails:
The park has several beginner-friendly trails that showcase its beauty without being too demanding. The 3 km Riisitunturi Nature Trail is popular and accessible year-round, with wooden paths and scenic viewpoints, including the famous Riisitunturi Fell summit. In winter, snowshoes or skis are recommended for easier walking.
Tips:
Dress warmly and in layers during winter—temperatures can get really cold.
Bring a good pair of waterproof boots or snowshoes for winter visits.
In summer, bug spray is handy—the mosquitoes can be persistent!
The park is peaceful and less crowded than some other Lapland spots, so it’s perfect if you want to avoid tourists.
Whether you come for the snowy magic or summer tranquility, Riisitunturi National Park is a true Lapland gem worth visiting.
