🔴 Rauðufossar
🗺️ How to Get There:
Rauðufossar is located right off Road 225 (Landmannaleið), the highland track that connects Road 26 with Landmannalaugar.
From Road 26, head east on Road 225 until you see a small road that goes to the right, just before the first big river crossing, you will find a signposted parking area with the name of the waterfall near the base of the mountain ridge. From there, it’s a 30–40 minute hike along a marked trail into the red rhyolite canyon where the waterfall emerges dramatically from the cliff.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Mid-June to mid-September, when Landmannaleið is open.
Late summer brings peak contrast between the red canyon walls and surrounding green moss. Snow lingers in early summer and makes the area even more photogenic.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Midday to late afternoon for even lighting deep in the canyon
Overcast days help bring out the red hues without glare
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens for capturing the whole ravine from the ground, near the base of the waterfall
Telephoto to compress the scene or isolate details in the red rock
Drone for aerial compositions of the stream cutting through the canyon
Composition ideas:
Shoot top-down with a drone to emphasize the contrast between red soil, blue water, and green moss
Include hikers in wide shots to convey scale and isolation
Focus on the textures and colors in the canyon walls during golden hour
