Point Reyes National Seashore is a scenic site located in California, but many visitors don't realize that its turbulent waters conceal shipwrecks from eras past. For centuries, the dark and unpredictable waters of Point Reyes have posed a great danger to sailors- with over fifty ships having sunken off its coasts since the 16th century. The first recorded wreck was of the Spanish galleon San Agustin, which ran aground during a storm in 1595 before being scattered across the Drakes Bay. Various other vessels have met their fates here, too - from lumber ships, to fishing scows and oil tankers. The shipwrecks can serve as time capsules offering glimpses into maritime life and history, while also providing solemn reminders of the lives and cargoes lost in these treacherous waters.

This particular shipwreck, is of the ship Point Reyes. Known also as the Tomales Bay Shipwreck, the Inverness Shipwreck, or the S.S. Point Reyes, this ship was planned for removal, but local photographers and citizens petitioned to have it remain in place, and that it did!
