Buda vs Pest: Which Side Should You Stay On?

Trying to decide where to stay in Budapest? Here’s the honest breakdown of Buda vs Pest - and which side I’d recommend.

One of the most common questions when planning a trip to Budapest is whether to stay in Buda or Pest. Since the city is split by the Danube, the two sides have very different vibes — and honestly, the best choice depends on what kind of trip you want.

If it’s your first time in Budapest, I would usually recommend staying in Pest. It’s more central for most visitors, more walkable for restaurants and cafés, and it’s where you’ll find a lot of the city’s energy. Areas around St. Stephen’s Basilica, District V, and parts of District VII are especially convenient. You’ll be close to major sights, public transport, brunch spots, nightlife, and a lot of the restaurants people come to Budapest for.

Pest feels livelier, busier, and more practical if you want that classic city break experience. It’s the side where you can walk out of your hotel and immediately be near cafés, bars, shopping streets, and plenty of sightseeing options. If you’re someone who wants to be in the middle of everything, Pest is usually the easier choice.

Buda, on the other hand, feels quieter, more elegant, and a little more relaxed. It’s home to places like Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church, and the Castle District, so if you love views, historic streets, and a more romantic atmosphere, Buda can be really special. Some hotels on this side also have incredible views toward the Parliament and the Danube, which can make the stay feel more unique.

That said, for most people, Buda is better for atmosphere, Pest is better for convenience. If you’re only in Budapest for a few days and want easy access to restaurants, brunch spots, and the main city buzz, I’d personally choose Pest. If you’re looking for something quieter, more scenic, or a little more luxurious, Buda can be a great option.

The good news is that Budapest is very easy to explore from either side. The bridges, trams, metro, and walkability make it simple to move around, so it’s not a dramatic decision. But if I had to keep it simple: Pest for first-timers, food lovers, and nightlife. Buda for views, romance, and a calmer stay.

If you want the best of both worlds, I’d look for a hotel either in central Pest near the Basilica / Parliament area, or on the Buda riverfront with easy access to the bridges and iconic views.
