If you can't make it all the way to the Gobi Desert, Elsen Tsarkhai is a great alternative. The dunes are not nearly as large and impressive, but they're still worth a visit, and a camel ride.

Hire one of the locals to guide you through the dunes, the ride is usually no more than an hour and it's great for people of all ages, including kids.

Stop for photos along the way and get to know Mongolia's Bactrian camels. Most people are surprised to discover their two humps make for a natural seat that's comfortable for traveling this way!
