кафе

Barreirinha Bar Café

Laid-back café with chill vibes

We love this one because you can sit in the sun and overlook the ocean without all the crowds!

The avocado burger is great 🥑🍔

2

кафе

Three House hotel, bar & restaurant

Rooftop café with great coffee & food

Three House is one of our go-to spots in Funchal for a good cup of coffee while enjoying a beautiful view of the city and the water. They get their beans from a local roastery up in Monte (just above Funchal), so their coffees are great! ☕️

Three House is a café/restaurant with super nice food for both brunch, lunch, and dinner. We like to go for brunch and get one of their brunch deals with 2-3 meals + 1-2 drinks.

For how good the quality is, the place is reasonably priced.

Fun fact: This place is also a hotel! 🏨

Funchal-Monte Cable Car

Scenic cable car ride in Funchal (Teleférico do Funchal)

The ride in the cable car is amazing! It takes you from downtown Funchal over the city and up to Monte! 🚡

For roughly 15-20 minutes, you’ll be floating over Funchal. The views of the ocean behind you and the mountains in front of you. Once you step out of the cable car in Monte, you’ll be greeted by an amazing cafe and beautiful gardens nearby!

If you wish to make a full day out of it, you can also go on a full-day tour to Monte with a guide.

The tour includes pick up at your accommodation, a guide, and the cable car trip, a trip to the church of Monte, the public gardens of Monte, and more. Book the full tour here!

Or, if you only want to do the cable car, you can get your tickets here.

Funchal Basket Ride (Monte Toboggan Wicker Sledges)

Iconic Madeiran toboggan adventure

This is not just a tourist activity!

Originating in the 19th century, these basket cars (or toboggans) are still operated by skilled "carreiros" who navigate the steep streets between Monte and Funchal ⛰️

Traditionally, these baskets were used to transport wealthy people as well as fresh fruit & vegetables, and sick people down from Monte to Funchal.

These days, it's a fun, fast-paced adventure down the hill that you can try!

The ride itself takes 6-7 minutes, but the wait time can be long (from 20 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the time of day you come). Try to avoid going on the days when there are multiple cruise ships in the harbour.

Please note: If you don't pre-book the ride, the place is cash only.

Mercado dos Lavradores

Colorful farmers' market in Funchal

The Mercado dos Lavradores, located in the heart of Funchal, is a vibrant farmers' market full of tropical fruits, flowers, and spices! 😋

It's a beautiful, popular spot to visit, with lots of history (it opened in 1940) – but please keep in mind that it can be very overpriced for this reason.

🕖 Their standard opening hours are: Mon-Sat, 7am-7pm.

We love strolling around it and maybe buying 1-2 fruits, but when we get more, we go to our local market: https://maps.app.goo.gl/vvfLzdAqqL1TF2Qs7 🥭

🌅 Head over to catch the sunset at Doca do Cavacas Restaurant 🌅

Drive, walk, take a bus, or grab a Bolt 🚕

Doca do Cavacas

Great restaurant overlooking the water (great for sunset)

Doca do Cavacas is a great restaurant that primarily serves seafood. It's also an amazing place to watch the sunset! 🌅

Try to get a table on the top floor by the water (ideally on the front right) so you can get the best view as the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean 🌊
