Tunisia

Don’t Forget to Go to the Beach

There’s a reason Tunisia is a popular resort destination. The beaches here are absolutely stunning, featuring some very clear water. While Sousse and Hammamet are two of the more popular beach destinations in Tunisia, don’t sleep on Djerba and Kelibia!

Don’t Miss Seeing the Ruins in Dougga, Carthage, and El Jem

Even if you are not a history nut, you will be impressed by the ruins in Tunisia. Carthage is obviously a must-see, but don’t forget to visit El Jem, one of the largest amphitheaters in the world. And a lesser-known spot we highly recommend is Dougga. Dougga is home to the best-preserved Roman village in North Africa, where you’ll see many structures that are still standing.

Know That You Will Get Lost in the Medina

Medinas can be a maze, so the reality is that you will get lost. Even if you have Google Maps, more often than not, you’ll find yourself being led down non-existent routes or dead ends. This is just a reality of exploring the medina, so don’t panic! Just let yourself wander. And when you’re ready to leave, just vaguely follow Google Maps, and eventually, you’ll find your way out.

Check Out Star Wars Filming Sites

Tunisia is home to many famous Star Wars film sites that you have to visit if you visit the south of Tunisia. One of our favorites was Mos Espa, which is the actual filming site of a Star Wars settlement. Many of the original structures are still standing here. There is no fee to enter, but you’ll find vendors in and around Mos Espa selling various knick-knacks and even camel rides.

Another favorite was Matmata. Matmata is a small town famous for its underground cave dwellings. Specifically, here, you should visit Hotel Sidi Driss. This hotel is the filming site of the interior of Luke Skywalker’s home. You can either stay here or visit for free. We stayed in a different cave hotel just down the road, Marhala Hotel.

Spend a Night in the Dunes of the Sahara

One experience you absolutely cannot miss out on is spending a night in the Sahara. We spent the night here with Dunes Insolites and couldn’t recommend them more! Alongside simply glamping in the dunes of the Sahara, you also partake in some cultural experiences. We also sandboarded, rode a camel, and saw one of the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises. Another recommendation is Camp Mars.
