Starting hikes early isn’t just a “serious hiker” thing — it genuinely makes the experience better, safer, and more enjoyable. Here’s why it matters, especially in the mountains:
Better Weather and Also Safer Conditions
Morning weather is usually calmer and more predictable. In alpine regions, afternoon thunderstorms are common, and being off exposed ridges before they roll in is a big safety win. The skies are often clearer in the morning.
Cooler Temperatures
Early starts mean cooler air, which makes uphill climbs easier and reduces the risk of overheating and dehydration — especially in summer. + you can cool down in a lake after the hike in the afternoon!
Fewer Crowds
Popular trails are quieter in the morning. You get clear paths, peaceful viewpoints, and fewer people at narrow sections, summit crosses, or cable cars. I've experienced that being up on the trail somewhere before 9 or 10 AM makes a huge difference. The earlier the better.
More Time and Flexibility
Starting early gives you buffer time. If the hike takes longer than expected, you want breaks, or plans change, you’re not racing daylight or the last cable car on the way down. And believe me, I made quite a few experiences where we lost track of time whilst enjoying the trail or taking pictures and it ended in running to the cable car which is neither safe nor enjoyable.
In short: early starts mean better weather, fewer crowds, more safety, and a calmer, more rewarding hiking experience — and you’re back down in time for a relaxed afternoon or a well-earned mountain lunch. 🥾⛰️
