Location matters more than the hotel itself

Rome is one of those cities where location matters more than the hotel itself. If it’s your first trip, staying in the right area will save you time, energy, and a lot of walking between sights.

Here’s how I’d choose if I was visiting Rome again for the first time.

Historic Centre (Pantheon / Navona / Trevi Area)

Best for: first-time visitors who want everything walkable.

If you want to step outside and instantly feel like you’re in Rome, this is the safest choice. You’ll be close to major sights like the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona, and most places are easy to reach on foot.

✔ Perfect for short trips

✔ Beautiful atmosphere day and night

❗ Hotels can be smaller and more expensive

Personal tip: If it’s your first visit and you’re only here a few days, staying central makes the biggest difference to your experience.

Trastevere

Best for: food lovers & evening atmosphere.

This is one of my favourite areas in Rome because it feels lively and local, especially at night. The streets are full of restaurants, wine bars, and little piazzas.

✔ Amazing food scene

✔ Great evening energy

❗ Slightly longer walk or tram to main sights

Personal tip: Stay here if you want Rome to feel more relaxed and less touristy.

🌟 Monti (my personal favourite to stay)

Best for: trendy vibe + great location.

Monti sits between the Colosseum and Termini and has a cool, slightly bohemian feel with cafés, boutiques, and wine bars. It’s a great balance between location and atmosphere.

✔ Walkable to major sights

✔ Stylish local vibe

✔ Great vintage shopping

Personal tip: This is where I’d stay if I wanted central but not overly touristy.

Around Termini Station

Best for: budget travellers & easy transport.

This area gets mixed opinions, but it’s practical if you’re arriving late or leaving early. There are lots of hotels and transport connections.

✔ Easy airport access

✔ Usually cheaper hotels

❗ Less atmospheric at night

If you only remember one thing:

For a first trip, prioritise location over price. Rome is big and walk-heavy, and staying central makes the whole experience easier and more magical.
