Spanish is the primary language in Peru, and while English is spoken in tourist hotspots, many locals (especially in rural areas or public transportation) may not speak it. Having Google Translate downloaded with Spanish offline access is a game-changer. Learn a few basic phrases like:
“¿Dónde está el baño?” (Where is the bathroom?)
“La cuenta, por favor” (The check, please)
“¿Cuánto cuesta?” (How much does it cost?)
Politeness goes a long way, and locals are generally kind and patient with travelers who make an effort to speak Spanish.
There are also local historical languages that are spoken as well (Quechuan).
