How to Access Medical Care in Japan 🏥
Japan has a highly efficient, high-quality healthcare system. If you get sick outside Tokyo, however, it can be harder to find hospitals with English support or doctors available without an appointment. Whether you’re in Tokyo, Osaka, or rural areas, here’s what to do and where to go.
Useful Phone Numbers & Apps
These apps and services help you find English-speaking care:
Japan Healthcare Info — designed for tourists and foreign residents; lists hospitals/clinics with English support.
Website: https://www.japan-healthcare-info.jp/Tokyo Medical Guide — helps you find doctors and clinics with English-speaking staff.
Website: http://www.tmg.or.jp/english/Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) — list of hospitals with English support 🌍
Google Maps — search “hospital” or “clinic” and check reviews in English.
Your hotel front desk — staff can suggest the nearest hospital with English-speaking doctors.
Apps like Japan Travel by Navitime or Google Translate — useful when staff don’t speak English.
If you’re in rural areas, call the local tourist office or ask at a pharmacy (薬局 yakkyoku) for guidance to nearby hospitals.

What to Do in a Serious Emergency 🚑
1️⃣ Call 119 🚨 — Japan’s emergency number for ambulances and firefighters. Some operators can assist in English.
2️⃣ Ask for help at your hotel or from a local — in rural areas, staff or residents can help you contact a doctor.
3️⃣ Carry your passport — you’ll need it to register at a hospital.
If no one speaks English
Use translation apps (Google Translate, etc.) to explain symptoms and medications.
Ask if the hospital has interpreter services; some international hospitals/clinics can arrange one.
Bottom Line: Prevention Beats Panic ✈️🏥
Getting sick on a trip is never fun, but with a little prep you can handle it calmly. Whether you need a quick consult in Osaka or Kyoto, or you’re in a rural area with fewer options, there’s always a way to get care.
✅ Save the addresses of the recommended hospitals.
✅ Carry cash, in case you need to pay at the clinic or pharmacy.
✅ For minor issues, ask a pharmacy first.
✅ Carry travel insurance. I recommend GO ASSISTANCE, which you can purchase before your trip. Use code “waldirdesu” to get 10% off any plan.
With these precautions, you can travel with peace of mind knowing you’re covered for the unexpected. Take care—and enjoy your trip across Japan! 🇯🇵
