Miradouro do Abismo is located at the easternmost point of Madeira Island, along the dramatic Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula. It sits just off the popular PR8 hiking trail (Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço), near the village of Caniçal. From the official PR8 trailhead parking lot, it’s about a 15-minute detour to reach the viewpoint.
What makes it special:
This is one of Madeira’s most dramatic viewpoints — perched on a cliff approximately 100 meters above the ocean, with panoramic views stretching across both the northern and southern coastlines of the island. It feels wild and untamed, with no barriers and an open view into the Atlantic abyss — hence the name “Miradouro do Abismo” (Viewpoint of the Abyss).
The viewpoint is marked by a concrete trig pillar, making it easy to spot. The final stretch of the trail is narrow and follows the cliff edge, so caution is required, especially in windy conditions.
What you’ll see:
To the east, you’ll see the iconic rocky ridge known as the “Dragon’s Tail”, stretching into the sea.
To the north and south, vast ocean views and rugged coastal cliffs unfold in both directions.
On a clear day, you can see both shorelines at once — a rare and mesmerizing sight.
Best time to visit:
Sunrise: This is one of the most beautiful sunrise spots in Madeira. Early morning light paints the rocks gold, and you’ll likely have the place to yourself.
Golden hour / Sunset: In summer months, the sun sets in a way that also illuminates this viewpoint, offering a rare chance to witness both sunrise and sunset here depending on the season.
