Salto do Cagarrão is a hidden gem on São Miguel Island in the Azores, located near the small town of Faial da Terra. This charming 6-meter-high waterfall is known for its secluded, lush surroundings and natural beauty, which appeal to hikers and nature enthusiasts seeking quieter spots away from more popular attractions.

The name “Cagarrão” is an informal local term, perhaps named for its modest size compared to other nearby waterfalls. Despite its smaller height, the waterfall’s appeal lies in its untouched, green setting, with dense forest and uniquely shaped trees that make the trail itself an enchanting experience.

To reach Salto do Cagarrão, visitors can take the Sanguinho Trail (PRC 09 SMI) starting at Faial da Terra. This path leads through the historical village of Sanguinho and continues to the nearby Salto do Prego waterfall before arriving at Salto do Cagarrão. To reach the waterfall you have to extend your hike along PR11 SMI - Trilho da Ribeira do Faial da Terra. Thus, you will need to go approximately three kilometers uphill. But along the way, you’ll see plenty of fascinating landscapes.

Another option is a shorter 1,5 km walk along the Ribeira do Faial da Terra trail (PRC 11 SMI) starting on the EN-1-1A road. From this starting point, the walk will be half as long and easier, as it mostly involves a gentle incline.
