Culture
Often overshadowed by the more famous Villa del Balbianello, Villa Monastero is one of the most underrated places on Lake Como — especially for travelers who prefer a quieter, more elegant atmosphere over heavily touristic hotspots. Stretching directly along the waterfront of Varenna, this historic villa combines botanical gardens, lakeside promenades, mountain scenery, and one of the most peaceful walking experiences around the lake.
Originally founded as a Cistercian convent in the 12th century, the property was later transformed into a private aristocratic residence. Today, it functions as a museum, botanical garden, and cultural venue, but the real highlight for most visitors is the spectacular lakeside garden path running for almost 2 kilometers along the shore.
Unlike many villas on Lake Como, Villa Monastero feels much less formal and more immersive. Instead of viewing the lake from a distance, you walk directly beside the water almost the entire time, surrounded by palm trees, cypress trees, subtropical plants, statues, pergolas, and dramatic alpine scenery.

Why this place stands out
Villa Monastero is less about “one iconic viewpoint” and more about atmosphere. The experience here is slow, cinematic, and surprisingly relaxing compared to the busier central Lake Como villas.
What makes it special:
One of the longest accessible lakeside villa gardens on Lake Como
Beautiful combination of alpine and Mediterranean vegetation
Excellent photography location throughout the entire property
Significantly calmer than Villa del Balbianello
Easy access directly from Varenna
Incredible reflections and soft light in the morning
One of the best places on the lake for a relaxed stroll without rushing
Many travelers who visit both Balbianello and Monastero end up preferring Monastero because it feels more authentic and less overcrowded.
Tickets & reservations
Unlike Villa del Balbianello, tickets here are usually much easier to obtain, and advance booking is not always necessary outside peak summer weekends.
However:
summer weekends can still become very busy;
some interior museum sections may have limited opening schedules;
special events and weddings occasionally affect access to parts of the gardens.

Gardens vs museum
There are usually separate ticket options for:
botanical garden only;
villa museum + gardens.
For most travelers, the gardens are the main reason to visit.
The museum interior is elegant but relatively modest compared to some famous Italian palaces. It is more interesting for:
architecture lovers;
history enthusiasts;
travelers interested in aristocratic interiors and scientific history.
If your focus is photography, scenery, or relaxation, the gardens alone are already absolutely worth it.
Best time to visit
Morning is by far the best time
Villa Monastero becomes especially magical in the early morning when:
the lake is calmer;
tour groups have not yet arrived;
the light is softer;
reflections on the water are stronger.
After late morning, Varenna becomes considerably busier due to ferry arrivals.
Seasonal highlights
Spring → flowers and fresh vegetation
Early summer → lush gardens and long daylight
Autumn → beautiful warm tones and fewer crowds
Winter → quieter atmosphere, but shorter opening schedules
Unlike some alpine attractions, Villa Monastero works very well even during shoulder seasons.
How to reach Villa Monastero
One of the biggest advantages of Villa Monastero is how easy it is to access.
The villa is located directly inside Varenna and only:
~10–15 minutes walking from Varenna ferry terminal
~15 minutes from Varenna-Esino train station
This makes it one of the easiest Lake Como villas to visit without a car.
By ferry
Villa Monastero combines perfectly with:
Bellagio
Menaggio
Como

By train
Varenna is one of the few towns on Lake Como with a very convenient train connection from Milan, making Villa Monastero an excellent day-trip destination without renting a car.
Photography tips
Villa Monastero is arguably one of the best photography locations on Lake Como because the scenery constantly changes as you walk through the gardens.
Best photo spots:
the long lakeside promenade;
cypress-lined walkways;
arches and pergolas over the water;
viewpoints facing Bellagio;
reflections near sunrise;
the classical statues along the shoreline.
For drone photographers
Drone regulations around Lake Como have become stricter in recent years, especially near towns, villas, and populated waterfront areas. Flying here can be complicated due to local restrictions and high tourist density.
Early morning is usually the only realistic time for unobstructed photography.
Practical tips
Allocate around 1.5–3 hours for the visit.
Wear comfortable shoes — the gardens are longer than many visitors expect.
Bring water during summer.
Toilets and café facilities are available nearby.
Combine the villa with exploring Varenna itself.
The villa is excellent for slow travel days and relaxed itineraries.
Don’t skip Varenna
Many travelers rush through Varenna in under an hour, which is a mistake. The village itself is one of the most atmospheric places on Lake Como:
narrow alleys;
colorful facades;
waterfront cafés;
hidden stairways;
small harbor views.
Villa Monastero fits naturally into the town rather than feeling isolated from it, which is one reason why the overall experience feels so cohesive.
Is Villa Monastero worth visiting?
Absolutely — especially if you prefer:
elegant scenery over tourist hype;
relaxed exploration;
photography;
botanical gardens;
atmospheric lake walks.
While Villa del Balbianello is more dramatic and cinematic, Villa Monastero often leaves a stronger emotional impression because of its tranquility and immersive lakeside setting. For many independent travelers, it becomes one of the most unexpectedly memorable places on Lake Como.
