Overview:
The Rocha do Chambre trail is a circular hike through Terceira’s volcanic highlands, offering some of the most panoramic ridge views on the island. It takes you to the top of Rocha do Chambre, a dramatic volcanic formation that rises sharply from the island’s green interior — its vertical basalt walls making it a geological landmark.

Why Hike This Trail:

• 360° views over the central volcanic plateau of Terceira

• Walk along the rim of an ancient caldera, with dense forest on one side and open plains on the other

• Experience dramatic changes in terrain, from eucalyptus forest to volcanic ridges

• See native vegetation, wildflowers, and possibly grazing cows on the plains below

Highlights Along the Route:

• Rocha do Chambre Ridge: A narrow spine with steep drop-offs on both sides — best section for photos and drone shots

• Forests of Cryptomeria and Laurissilva: The trail starts and ends in quiet, misty woodland

• Chance to observe Azorean buzzards and endemic flora

Trail Notes:

• The trail is well-marked and maintained, but some ascents are steep and can get slippery after rain

• Best to hike on a clear day to enjoy the expansive views — fog is common in the higher sections

• Wear good hiking shoes, and bring water and snacks

Access:

• Trailhead located near Cabouco, easily reachable by car (parking available)

• Trail is circular, so you return to the same point where you start

Insider Tip:
Try to do this hike in the morning, when the light is softer and chances of clear skies are higher. The ridge section is especially photogenic at golden hour if you time it right. It's not as busy as some other trails, making it perfect for hikers seeking solitude and epic landscapes.
