Miradouro da Fonte da Areia, located on the northern coast of Porto Santo Island, derives its name from the abundance of sand (“areia” in Portuguese) found in the area. Historically, this site was renowned for its pure water source, once considered sacred by locals.

The viewpoint offers panoramic vistas of the Ilhéu da Fonte de Areia, the adjacent cliffs, and the island’s northern coastline. The landscape is predominantly arid, characterized by sandy rock formations sculpted by wind erosion over centuries, creating a unique visual spectacle that reflects the geological antiquity of Porto Santo.

Nearby, visitors can explore an 18th-century fountain, a testament to the area’s historical significance. The surrounding terrain, with its biogenic carbonate sandstones known as eolianites, showcases the natural processes that have shaped the island’s distinctive sandy beaches.

While the site is accessible, caution is advised due to the sandy terrain and potential erosion. The viewpoint is situated near the northern boundary of Porto Santo Airport, making it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the island.
