Fajã de João Dias is a charming settlement located on the northern coast of São Jorge Island in the Azores. This debris field, formed from collapsing cliffs, is home to a small chapel, traditional houses, and modern homes. Following an earthquake in 1980, most buildings were destroyed, but some have been renovated as weekend retreats. Accessible only by foot or pack animal, a steep paved road leads down the 450-meter cliff to the rocky beach below. Freshwater springs and cisterns provide water for the residents, who enjoy a microclimate perfect for growing fruits like figs, vines, and corn.
