Cromwell is a compact Central Otago town on Lake Dunstan that works best as a base for wineries, fruit stalls, biking the nearby Otago Central Rail Trail, and water sports. You should have a car because public transport is limited and many of the best cellar doors, trails, and ski areas are a 30 to 60 minute drive away. In summer it gets very dry and sunny so bring sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water; in winter nights get cold and roads can ice, so pack warm layers. Cards are widely accepted but carry a little cash for weekend markets and rural stalls, and book accommodation and popular tastings or bike hires ahead if you visit on a summer weekend or during harvest.
