You’ll mainly use Picton as the ferry gateway to the South Island and the launching point for the Marlborough Sounds, so plan around ferry times and book ahead in summer; parking near the terminal fills fast and long-term lots have fees. The town is very compact and walkable, with a basic supermarket, handy cafes and a tourist information centre at the harbour where you can book water taxis, boat cruises and shuttles for the Queen Charlotte Track. Weather shifts quickly so bring layers and a light waterproof, and if you want to visit Marlborough wineries note Blenheim is about a 30 to 40 minute drive. Boat trips and wildlife tours sell out, and if you arrive late your options are limited, so consider booking your first night in town.
