Wānaka is a compact, outdoorsy town on a beautiful lake where you should plan around activities rather than wandering aimlessly: book accommodation and any ski or guided trips well in advance for summer and winter, rent gear in town, and fuel up before heading to backcountry roads. If you want the iconic Roys Peak photo, expect a steep, crowded climb and go very early or pick a quieter alternative like Mount Iron or Diamond Lake/Tarn. Weather changes fast, so pack layers and a waterproof, and in winter watch for icy roads and possible chain requirements to Cardrona or Treble Cone. Cafes, gear shops and supermarkets are all within easy walking distance of the main street, but services thin out quickly once you leave town. Cell service is ok around town but can be patchy in remote hikes, so download maps and let someone know your plans. Finally, respect private property around popular photo spots, follow track closures, and leave no trace so Wānaka stays as tidy as you found it.
