If you are driving the Milford Road, Lake Gunn is an easy, scenic roadside stop with a small picnic area and parking where you can stretch your legs and take photos of the water framed by beech forest. There is a short loop walk through native beech and wetlands that takes about 20 to 45 minutes and a basic DOC campsite with toilets but no power or showers, so plan to stay self-sufficient. Expect changeable, often wet weather and very limited mobile signal, bring a rain jacket and insect repellent, and note that dogs are not allowed in the national park.
