Routeburn Track- Key Summit is a short but incredibly rewarding alpine walk starting from the Routeburn Shelter near Glenorchy, ideal if you want classic Fiordland views without doing a multi-day hike. It’s best for first-time NZ travellers, nature lovers, and anyone short on time who still wants that “wow” moment. The return walk takes about 3 hours in total, with a steady uphill climb that’s moderate but very manageable if you’re reasonably fit. Bring proper walking shoes, a warm layer, rain jacket, water, and snacks, weather changes fast here, even in summer. What you can expect are sweeping mountain views, alpine tarns, and valleys that genuinely look unreal on a clear day, with far fewer people than the full Routeburn Track, making it one of the best half-day hikes for maximum payoff.
