Alex Knob Track is a challenging full-day hike that climbs high above Franz Josef Glacier and gives wide, dramatic views over the glacier valley and mountains. The track is about 17 km return and takes roughly 6–8 hours, with a steady, sometimes steep climb through forest and alpine terrain, so it’s best for confident, fit hikers. You’ll need proper hiking shoes, warm and waterproof layers, plenty of water and food, and an early start, as weather can change quickly and cloud often rolls in later in the day. There’s no technical climbing, but it’s a serious walk, so always check the DOC website for current track and weather conditions before you go.
