Isthmus Peak Track is a tough but incredibly rewarding day hike that climbs high above Lakes Wānaka and Hāwea, giving wide, open views the whole way. The track is about 15–16 km return and usually takes around 5–6 hours, with a long, steady climb and very little shade, so it’s best for fit, confident hikers. You’ll need good hiking shoes, plenty of water, food, sun protection, and warm layers as it can get windy and cold near the top. Expect fewer people than Roys Peak, a more rugged feel, and views that feel just as impressive, if not better. Always check the DOC website for current track conditions before you go, especially after rain or snow.
