Roy’s Peak Track is a famous day hike near Wānaka that climbs steadily above the town to give huge panoramic views over Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps. The return distance is about 16 km and it usually takes 5–6 hours for fit walkers because the climb is long and steep with about 1,200–1,300 m of elevation gain, and there’s almost no shade or water on the track. People often stop at the famous viewpoint partway up if they’re short on time, but the full summit gives even wider views. It’s on private land and closed from 1 October to 10 November each year for lambing, so check the DOC or locals for current status before you go. You’ll need good shoes, plenty of water and snacks, warm and windproof layers, sun protection, and an early start in summer to beat the heat and crowds.
