The rules in Australia
You can legally free camp in some designated areas in Western Australia and other areas can incur a fine... if you are caught by a ranger.
We have spent a lot of time free camping around Australia and some of the camps (including free ones) are absolutely stunning.
We have "sneaky camped" on occasion due to being too tired to continue driving or the caravan parks/campsites were full etc.
It is common knowledge that a lot of people free camp in Australia. You can get away if you arrive late and leave early in some private remote areas.
However if you get caught you will incur a fine. We have only been fined once after many years of living on the road.
Leave No Trace: Always leave the campsite in the same or better condition than you found it.
Respect Wildlife: Do not feed wild animals and give them plenty of space.
Be Considerate of Others: Avoid making excessive noise, especially at night, and set up camp at a reasonable distance from other campers to ensure privacy.
Check Signage: Pay attention to all signs, as they contain vital information about regulations and prohibited areas.
Support the Sites: If a donation box is present, consider leaving a small contribution to help keep the site open for other travellers
