Cebu is one of the Philippines’ main entry points, with an international airport. Chances are you’ll fly in there at some point in your trip!

It's a busy city like Manila, so honestly, we didn't spend much time there (we’re not fans of big cities). The good news is that the island of Cebu has heaps to offer once you escape the hustle and bustle.

Here are some epic spots you don't want to miss:

  • Moalboal sardine run

  • Kawasan Canyoneering

  • Epic waterfalls, like Dao Falls and Inambakan Falls

  • Sinulog Festival, a huge cultural event if you’re around in January

HOW LONG TO STAY?

We recommend 4–5 days on Cebu Island. That’s enough for Moalboal, a canyoneering day, a couple of waterfalls, and downtime at the beach!

If you’re planning to visit Malapascua or Bantayan Island, you might want to add an extra day or two, since they take a bit longer to get to.

GETTING THERE & MOVING AROUND

  • Fly: Domestic flights from Manila and most islands. Manila–Cebu takes 1 hr 15 min and usually costs $30–$90 USD.

  • Ferries: Cebu is well connected. Two hours to Bohol, longer routes to Siquijor and Leyte.

  • Move around town: Taxis (₱100–₱500 depending on distance and traffic), jeepneys (₱10–₱20), Grab (₱150–₱300), buses (₱15–₱200).

WHALESHARKS IN OSLOB

This is a VERY popular activity and a bucket-list item for many (including us). We were keen on doing it until we went to Oslob and saw the conditions.

It felt like a petting zoo. The lines were massive, with some people waiting for several hours. Also whale sharks are attracted with baits which it's unethical in our opinion.

For more details on why we chose not to do this activity in Oslob, go to this pin named "whale sharks in Oslob". It explains our reasoning and where we went instead to swim with whale sharks in the Philippines.

ACCOMMODATION

Choosing where to stay depends a lot on what you want to do.

  • Cebu City is best if you're looking for food, shopping, and easy access to transport. Stay around Fuente Osmeña Circle or Ayala Center Cebu, both are central, lively, and make getting around super easy. We recommend Castle Peak Hotel or Mandarin Plaza.

  • Moalboal is our preferred location, we loved staying there! It's closer to the waterfalls, the snorkelling spots, and there's great food and heaps of options for all budgets. It’s about a 2-hour van ride from Cebu City (₱120 per person). We recommend D' Gecko Hotel.

In Cebu City you’ll find everything from budget hostels to luxury hotels, but we recommend skipping the city and staying in Moalboal instead. You’ll get better vibes, food, and easy access to the activities.
