We did our whale shark tour in Southern Leyte after finding out that the conditions in Oslob (Cebu) were so unethical.
The whole experience in Oslob gets VERY crowded, with the sharks even getting injured due to the conditions of the tours (cut by propellers, kicked accidentally by tourists, etc).
After doing tons of research, we found out that Southern Leyte and Donsol are two ethical alternatives. Didn’t think twice, and we are so grateful we had this experience here!
HOW DO THEY SPOT THE WHALE SHARKS?
Spotters are towed behind the big boat! They sit on small boats, either with their heads in the water or scanning for shadows and bubbles. Zero baiting.
Once the spotters find the whale shark and make the signal, everyone gets ready to jump and swim with it.
OUR EXPERIENCE
We swam with 3 whale sharks 5 times! It was an amazing experience. If you’re in the Philippines from November to May, don’t skip this.
Tours usually run from 7:30am-3pm so it’s pretty much a full-day thing.
We booked our tour with Peter’s Dive Resort. Excellent guides, the crew managed the group well so it never felt overcrowded, and lunch was included back on the boat.
Just make sure to book early! Books out fast. Check availability here.
Note: Some providers are cash-only, double-check before booking.
