This small stone chapel in downtown Cebu houses a wooden cross planted by Portuguese explorers in 1521. It’s an important symbol of Christianity in the Philippines and one of the city’s oldest landmarks.

To be honest, it’s not something you’ll spend more than 10–15 minutes at. But if you’re already in Cebu City, it’s worth a quick stop to get a sense of the country’s history.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • The original cross is encased in a wooden shell to protect it.

  • You’ll usually find local women outside selling candles and offering to pray for you.

  • It’s right beside the Basilica del Santo Niño, so you can tick off two sights in one go.

  • No entry fee.

  • Best visited in the morning before traffic builds up.
